We are a group of 8 adults who enjoy cooking and drinking wine. What a perfect match to Villa Aquilea! The cooking class and pizza night with James were highlights at the villa, and "Butterfly" restaurant was spectacular! We enjoyed other culinary finds on our day trips in the area. My husband and I visited the Villa last August and I still can't believe the vivid memories of the house, flowers, the pool and the wonderful people in the surrounding town of Lucca. I can actually say to friends that I cooked an Italian meal in Tuscany. We visited Florence and Pisa during the day and then cmae back to this beautiful place in the evening. We watched the movie Under the Tuscan Sun while visiting and then looked around and it was not a movie it was real. We would recommend the experience to anyone.

We cannot recommend this enough! This is probably the one activity that our guests have unanimously absolutely loved, because the lesson is so much fun and the food is out of this world. The lesson takes place at your villa. Your chef will arrive at your villa about 4 p.m. and bring everything you need -- the ingredients, wine, tools. The lesson lasts about 3-4 hours and is hand-on and very informal. They are not demonstrations, but instead you will all be actively involved, making hand-made pasta and all the other courses. Our chef likes to talk and have fun and share wine and stories while she teaches about Tuscan cooking -- her great passion. Dinner will be ready about 7.30. After the meal is prepared, the chef will leave your group, and you can share the delicious meal you all prepared together.

The menus are typically Tuscan, with “antipasto” appetizers, a “primo” of pasta or soup, a “secondo” of meat or fish, a “contorno” of vegetables , a “dolce” dessert and of course, vino throughout. The menu is seasonal, using fresh local ingredients. Here are a couple examples....

Menu 1:

  • toasted bread with stracchino cheese, sausage and fennel seeds (or fried pizza dough balls )
  • tagliatelle (hand made pasta) with mushroom sauce
  • chicken with tuscan olives, aromatic herbs and lemon
  • vegetable sformata
  • cooked cream with strawberries

Menu 2:

  • bruschetta
  • ravioli ricotta e spinaci (filled, hand made pasta with ricotta and spinach, dressed with butter and sage)
  • meat roll with sweet tuscan bacon
  • cooked peppers
  • cantuccini biscuits.
