The Cinque Terre (the 'Five Lands'), is made up of 5 fishing villages on the Mediterranean Sea.  A wonderful place to spend a day, most of our guests visit here during their vacation - it is about 1.5 hours from most of our villas.

You can easily spend a full day staying in any one of the villages -- shopping, eating, swimming and exploring.

Or you can visit multiple villages.  The five villages are connected by a spectacular hiking path, and also a train line.  So, depending on your preference, you can take the train between the villages...

... or you can hike the beautiful path.

OR... another option -- a really great workout and lots of fun -- is to run the entire length of the five villages, along the path.

In late September, I went to the Cinque Terre to run the path.  I drove to Monterosso, the northernmost village.  Lots of beautiful scenery on the way

And a curvy road...

Monterosso is a charming town, with beaches

The path out from Monterosso, toward the next village, lead up up up up up stairs...

Looking back toward the village as you go up...

It follows the shore, but on top of the cliffs.  The path is beautiful.  Here a farmer had stared putting his olive nets out, for the harvest, which will happen in November...

The path moves between the olive trees, and the cliffs.  Here it opened up and I could see the next village...

It can be narrow in places....

As you approach Vernazza (my favorite village)... you start going down many steps...

Lots of hikers along the path.  You can see that the path is 1,000 years old, all paved with ancient stones...

Vernazza is beautiful.  You can spend the whole day here, swimming and exploring and taking photos. (I took all the photos on this page with my iPhone during the run)

It seems like something unreal, like the set of a movie, but it is just daily life in the Cinque Terre...

There is a 'secret' beach in Vernazza, but you need to walk through a cave to find it.

I started up the next leg of the journey, running up through the steps of the village...

There are coffee bars, gelato shops, restaurants, and many are built right into the cliffs...

Don't forget to check out all the scenery, like these guys in this old photo I saw along the way...

Looking back at Vernazza (close) and Monterosso (in the distance)

After thousands of steps, you can see the next villages (you can see Corniglia next, and further along, Manarola).

The steps are 1,000 years old, and you really need to watch your feet when you do the trail run...

Approaching the next village!

You can see that over the decades, pilgrims tend to use the same steps, which are polished...

Running down these, you really need to be careful...

Because it is September, the locals are harvesting the grapes.  Here you can see the farmers in the middlle of the screen. There is a cog/wheel miniature rail system, which winds its way up and down.  They load the grapes in this, and the little train cars haul them up an down the hill!!!

Lovers will write their names of locks, attach them, and throw the keys into the Sea.

After a great day running... maybe a gelato...

And maybe a shot of limoncello?

And definitely a swim!

And then a drive back ....

Thanks for joining me on this run.

Your trusty and sweaty reporter :) James
